Unbeknownst to me, Mic got himself blown up in February, shortly after he deployed. They were driving down the road at about 60 miles an hour- they go fast, so that if they hit an IED they just get the aftershock and not the explosion. But this particular IED that they hit was so powerful, it upended the vehicle. Mic hit his head so hard on the windshield he cracked his Kevlar helmet.
All I knew was that he had spent $700 on a new helmet, and I was pissed. That was half our mortgage payment! It was the only time I ever asked his parents for money, and when his Dad, the General, heard why I needed it, he was furious too! After all, the Army is supposed to issue helmets; why would he need to buy one? I didn’t understand at all.
