London was gray and dreary; it felt like it rained all the time. We lived in Hempstead, in a townhouse on Frognal Lane with a big stone wall around it, forming a courtyard outside. A family lived in the adjacent townhouse, Lord and Lady something, with a boy who was just a year younger than I. We became instant friends, and my mom became friends with them as well. She has a way of collecting people; she’s a pretty good judge of character, and when she makes friends, she keeps them for life. Their family owned a castle out in the country (they really were Lord and Lady something!) and we would go out for the weekend, as they threw regular weekend house parties.
